There’s nothing like the warm glow and inviting aroma of a beautifully scented candle. Whether you’re unwinding after a long day, setting the mood for a cozy night in, or filling your space with your favorite fragrance, candles bring comfort and relaxation to any home. But did you know that proper candle care can make a big difference in how your candles burn and how long they last?
At KREATIVE KAY, we handcraft each candle with love using high-quality, non-toxic soy wax for a clean and long-lasting burn. To help you enjoy your candles to the fullest, we’re sharing our expert tips on candle care and safety.
1. First Burn = Best Burn
Did you know the way you burn your candle the first time determines how it will burn for the rest of its life? When lighting a new candle, let it burn long enough for the melted wax to reach the edges of the container—this prevents tunneling, where wax builds up on the sides and wastes your candle. Ideally, burn your candle for at least 1 to 2 hours on the first use.
2. Trim the Wick for a Clean Burn
Before each use, trim the wick to ¼ inch to prevent excessive flickering, soot buildup, and an uneven flame. A long wick can cause a candle to burn too hot and fast, shortening its lifespan. Use wick trimmers or even nail clippers to keep your wick at the perfect length!

3. Keep Your Candle Away from Drafts
If your candle is near an open window, a fan, or an air vent, the moving air can cause uneven burning and black soot. To ensure an even, steady burn, place your candle in a draft-free
area.
4. Burn Time Matters
While it’s tempting to keep your candle burning all night, it’s best to burn for no more than 4 hours at a time. Over burning can lead to overheating, which affects the fragrance quality and can make the container too hot to handle.

5. Extinguish with Care
Instead of blowing out your candle, which can cause wax to splatter, use a candle snuffer to safely extinguish the flame. This also helps prevent smoke and keeps your wick in good shape for the next burn.
6. Know When to Say Goodbye
When your candle has about ½ inch of wax left, it’s time to retire it. Burning a candle all the way down can cause the container to overheat, which is a safety hazard. Instead of tossing it, consider repurposing the jar—clean it out and use it for storage, planters, or DIY projects!
7. Store Your Candles Properly
To keep your candles fresh and fragrant, store them in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Too much heat or light can cause the wax to soften or fade, reducing the scent throw.
